A rose, if pruned properly will have only the strongest canes remaining that will produce the best quality of flowers. This would be the time to remove any dead, damaged or spindly canes.

If roses are left unpruned, their energy will go towards spindly, twiggy growth that will deter quality flowers, if any. The stronger the cane the better flower it will produce.

Caution, make sure not to over prune. You should never remove more that 1/3 of the roses over all size. For instance, if you rose bush is 6 foot, you would only cut the canes back 2 feet.
