    Sports Direct, the retailer run by the controversial entrepreneur Mike Ashley, has bought almost 5pc of Amer Sports, less than three months after it sold its entire 12pc stake in the Finnish company.

    Sports Direct has bought 4.96pc of the Helsinki-listed company, which owns the ski brand Salomon and tennis label Wilson, for 48.2m Euros (£36m), or 13.5 Euros a share.

  • ( ) Loonie hits four-month low

    The Canadian dollar is back to the same level it was last September, weakening amid lower commodity prices and the prospect of softening North American economies.

    The currency reached 97.33 cents (U.S.) Wednesday, its lowest point since Sept. 18, before recently trading around the 97.70-cent mark. The loonie is the world's worst-performing currency against the greenback this year, sliding 2.2 per cent.

    This week's move came as global stock markets dove and on concern that weakening demand in the U.S. — Canada's largest trading partner — will hurt the domestic economy and after several Canadian reports suggested the economy is losing steam.

    "The spate of numbers we've had with Canada — employment was a shocker and new motor vehicle sales dropped...are showing a pretty strong direction to the downside," said Andrew Busch, global foreign exchange strategist at BMO Capital Markets in Chicago. More>>
